Mick Montcalm’s 16-pointer

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 16

Kill Date: 11-14-2009

County: Lawrence

Season: Bow

This was just an ordinary hunt. With leaves on the ground and every squirrel you hear crunching around, you think it’s that big one you’ve been waiting for.  Well, I heard those leaves crunching and thought nothing of it but decided to take a peak behind me, and there he stood.  I quickly turned back around so the tree was covering me, and as I heard him walk again, I drew back and just waited. Luckily, he came up on my right side, which made for a perfect left-handed shot.  When the time was finally right I let it fly and thought I had made a perfect shot.  He ran about 30 yards behind me and stood there staring back at me.  So I knocked up another arrow and just as soon as I got the pin on him, he dropped and there he lay.  Not only is the biggest buck I have ever killed, it was my first one with my first bow as well.  I grew up in a family with no hunters to ever teach me the trade, so I have done all of this on my own to get into the sport of bow hunting. He scored 185 1/8.
