The Story of my first deer, did I mention it was a 13 point buck?

So, I had not really planned on going hunting at all Fall 2009.  I was 7 ½ months pregnant with our first baby (a girl we named Adelheid!) and the thought of having a harness on and climbing up a climbing stick, sitting on hard seat and not being able to move for a few hours…no thank you!  However my husband had other things in mind!  In the middle of October we headed to my in-laws for a baby shower, my husband made sure I had hunting clothes packed and my bow ready to go; he was determined to get me in a stand.

Even as I am getting into all my scent-free garb, and had to safety pin my bibs because they wouldn’t fit over my belly, I am not convinced this sounds like much fun!  Jason assured me this would be perfect!  I was going to be able to use his Dad’s ladder stand! Much easier climbing than a climbing stick or tree steps with a big o’ belly in front of me!  Also, I would be hunting over my brother-in-laws food plot!  The weather was comfortable and I thought if nothing else I could relax and think about December when Baby Adelheid was due!

So, it must have been about a half hour of sitting in the tree stand when my hands were starting to get cold and I heard something…I slowly turned and I saw a doe!  So exciting!  I had shotgun hunted here the year before with no luck!  So even seeing something was awesome!  As the doe walked right next to my stand I was super excited, she stopped about 12 yards in front to my right with a tree branch covering her entire front half, giving me no good shot.  I decided to slowly stand in hopes maybe I could get a different view…to no avail!  She munched for awhile and then seemed to see something she didn’t like and started to meander away.

About 15 minutes later I heard something again…I thought for sure it was just a squirrel, but as I slowly turned (still standing at this point) I saw another deer!!  It was a buck…I turned back and stood as still as possible, I was so afraid of spooking him. As he slowly walked the same path the doe had taken I started counting his tines, I knew Jason told me to shoot whatever, but I didn’t want to harvest a little buck, I had heard too many things about letting them go so they could grow bigger!  After I got to number eight, I stopped counting and slowly pulled up my bow…I took a few breaths checked and re-checked my “target” spot and then let the arrow fly. The buck dropped right where he was at…I couldn’t believe it, I wasn’t sure what to do, then I realized I had hit his spine. I was beyond freaking out!  I called Jason on my cell-phone and (not sure why) whisper yelled that I got one and for him to come NOW!  He asked me what I shot, I told him a buck, he wanted more details, but I just kept whisper yelling come on I need you now!  In a few moments I heard the four-wheeler and Jason jumped off in front of my stand and the first thing he says is “You didn’t tell me it was a big one!” I wasn’t sure that mattered apparently it does!
