Season: Shotgun

Hi my name is Kris Radford. This picture is of my first buck killed. I’m 29 years old and have only been hunting for four years.

It was the Saturday of first shotgun season this year. We didn’t see very many deer on Friday, so I sat in the stand and kept my eyes pealed for a deer to come running through the woods. I’ve never shot a deer with a shotgun, so I was on a mission to do so. I climbed into my big dog ladder stand at about 6 am that morning. I saw a nice 8 pointer but could never get a good shot on him. One minute later I hear a shot and I was for sure it was our neighbor shooting the 8 pointI had just seen.

My hope of shooting a buck was out the window. I didn’t see any other deer that morning, so I climbed out and went to the barn where my brother was cleaning a deer that he shot Friday night. After he was done, he and my dad went into town to get some lunch, while I decided to go back to the woods and sit all afternoon.

I climbed back in my stand around 1:00 pm and sat and enjoyed all the things that nature has to offer. I tried to do some rattling and some grunting to see if I could get the woods fired up but no success. Then at around 3:30 pm I was standing in my stand watching over a corn field behind me. This is when I heard the footsteps coming through the woods. So I grabbed my H & R single shot turned around and sat down to see if I could see what was coming through the woods.

Out of no where a doe appeared. I thought, ‘Sweet, I’m going to take her.’ So I readied my gun and was following her through the woods waiting for the right shot.

All of a sudden I hear another deer behind her, and I see antlers. My heart starts beating, I take my sight off of the doe and put it on the buck. He was about 70 yards out through the woods, but I have one opening that they pass through for a clean shot with no branches in the way. I followed him with my scope, and right before he got to the clearing, I grunted at him and he stopped. I thought holy s#$%
it worked. He stood for what seemed like an hour and then he took to steps into the clearing and I let the hammer drop.

I saw the impact and the buck didn’t go 20 yards. I was pumped. Standing in a stand fist pumping and smiling from ear to ear. I sat till the end of the hunt so I didn’t stir up the woods for my brother and my dad and then went over to see what I had done. When I walked up to him I couldn’t believe it, a 10 pointer for my first buck ever. He will be on the wall soon.

Just want to say thanks for letting me tell my story.
