EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of bowhunter Joel Carpenter of Coal City is the story of his hunt for a 19-point buck.

On the morning of Nov. 12, 2008 I had the best hunt of my life. I took the day off work and planned to stay on stand all day.

As soon as it got started getting light I could hear bucks chasing does in the thicket in front of me. Then a small 8-point buck bred a doe 20 yards away. I watched several small bucks for about 30 minutes.

Then a 10-pointer came in at 15 yards and I decided to shoot him. After shooting, I was not sure of the shot. So I wanted to give him a couple of hours before checking on him. For the next 30 minutes I didn’t see any deer. Then a shooter 8-pointer came in and bred a doe. He then started chasing her around and I was watching them for 10 minutes when I heard a buck grunt behind me.

I turned to look and couldn’t believe what I saw: points everywhere. He walked underneath me and stopped at 5 yards. I shot and saw blood spray instantly. He went about 100 yards.

He has 19 scorable points and a green score of 222. The other buck went 150 yards, he was about 120 inches. Probably should have passed on him, but he still is respectable.

Is 222 the green gross score or green net?

let him walk? Theres nothing wrong with shooting a second buck if you aren’t sure you had a good hit on the first buck.  19 pointers don’t come every day
