Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 15

Kill Date: Oct. 1, 2009

County: Fulton

Season: Bow

When rainy weather cancelled his work for the day, Jim Kem had a much better option.

He went bowhunting. And boy is the Bryant resident glad he did.

Hunting in Fulton County, Kem shot a mature 15-point Fulton County buck to open the 2009-10 archery season in style.

“I’d seen him a couple times feeding in my yard and in the beanfield beside my house,” said Kem, who runs Big Jim’s Tree Service.

Kem didn’t see the big one immediately on opening day, though.

“I woke up from a nap about 2 p.m. and I said I was just going to walk out and see what’s going on in the woods,” Kem said. “I even walked under an oak tree and fell asleep fell asleep twice. Rain drops were waking me up.”

His encounter with a trophy came later in the evening at about 6:30 p.m. while walking slowly along the edge of an alfalfa field.

“I thought maybe I’ll take a doe, let’s see what happens,” Kem said. “Then I looked to my right and saw a 6-pointer. The big one came running right out at the 6 pointer with his ears laid back. Probably if it wasn’t for that little buck being in that spot he would no have come out at all.”

When the buck got to within 40 yards he took a shot. “I double-lunged him and he went about 90 yards before he went down,” Kem said.

Kem said the buck grossed 182 5/8 inches green. The antlers and skull plate weighed 8.5 pounds. Kem estimates the buck field dressed at 220 pounds.

“The pressure is off. That’s the first time I ever killed one on opening day,” Kem said. “It was always a dream and it happened. I was just tickled to death.”
