Jim Arbuckle’s 22-pointer

January 20, 2012

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 22

Kill Date: Dec. 1, 2011

County: Wayne

Season: Shotgun

Jeremy Arbuckle of Villa Grove Illinois shot this Wayne County buck on Thursday morning December 1, 2011 first day of the second firearms season at 7:30 AM. After watching some does coming out of a thicket and moving to the field to feed, some movement caught my eye to the right. Turning my attention to the movement I couldn’t believe what I saw.

Finally after 22 years of deer hunting (bow and firearms) with many bucks to my credit, the best buck of my hunting career walks out of the same thicket following the does and stopping in a clearing at 130 yards. Carefully raising my 50 caliber TC Pro Hunter and zeroing in on the buck with my Nikon 250 BC from my elevated box stand, I pulled the trigger and when the smoke cleared, there laid my buck right were he stood.

Being so excited and forcing myself to wait before checking on my deer, when I calmed after 20 minutes, which seemed like hours, I got down, and the closer I got to him, the bigger he got. After the whooping and celebrating I had just harvested a 22 point non-typical 240 pound deer the best deer to date.
