Jesse Fortman’s 13-pointer

November 21, 2008

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 13

Kill Date: Nov. 21, 2008

County: Randolph

Season: Shotgun

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of Percy hunter Jesse Fortman is the story of his hunt for a 13-point buck.

Opening morning of the first 2008 Illinois shotgun season was good and cold. My girlfriend, Sherri, and I headed out to the woods to our deer stands about an hour before daylight.

About 7:15 a.m. a doe ran out into the field I was overlooking. I turned on my red dot and was watching her through my scope getting ready to shoot when I noticed she kept looking behind her. So I waited a few minutes and out came this big buck.

I couldn’t really tell how big his rack was but I knew he was a nice mature buck worth the taking.

So I did just that and he took about four steps and dropped. I couldn’t wait to go out and see him up close. He had a good-sizes body and rack with 13 countable points and a 24 inch spread with 2 nice kickers.

I had my first kill of shotgun season already by 7:30 a.m. but I still hunted all weekend with no other luck.

My girlfriend did take a 7-point buck the next morning. Overall we had a good first season.
