Jeremy Cauble’s 21-pointer

November 21, 2008

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 21

Kill Date: Nov. 21, 2008

County: Fayette

Season: Shotgun

The buck known to locals as “Lucky,” “Ghost,” “High Tower” and “Cauble’s Buck” finally passed from legend into the back of a pickup on opening day of the 2008 Illinois firearm season.

And the hunter fortunate enough to bag the big 21-pointer is Jeremy Cauble, a 15-year-old Ramsey high schooler who shot the buck early opening morning with his muzzleloader while hunting near Ramsey State Park.

According to the Ramsey News Journal, the buck’s 21-point rack was green-scored at 238 inches, gross. The paper also said, “A Boone & Crockett official told Cauble it will rank in the top 75 to 100 whitetail non-typical bucks of all time.”

Apparently hunters have found shed antlers from the buck each of the past two years. The antlers scored 204 inches in 2006 and 202 inches last year.

“He was one in 10 million,” father Mike Cauble told the paper. “The odds of a hunter even seeing one in the wild this big is like winning the lottery!”

Ron Smith of Bourbonnais and his buddies had been looking for the monster buck for the past three years.

“We knew this monster was in our area” Smith said. “Everyone in ours and the adjoining camps were on the lookout for it. We always sighted it but no one was ever in position to take a shot,” Smith said.

“A 15 year old kid did what hunters with 10-to-30-year’s experience couldn’t do. He brought down a deer that will be talked about for years.

Cauble downed the monster deer roughly three miles from Smith’s deer camp north of Ramsey State Park.

Hey Jeremy, this is Ransom Brooks of Olney.  I killed the 23point in the picture right below yours.  Is that your Gross score or net?  If it is your gross what is the net if you don’t mind me asking.  Thanks
