EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of Hidalgo hunter Jason DeSotel is the story of his hunt for a big 18-point Henderson County buck.

It was Sunday morning, the third day of the Illinois firearm season and my two brothers and I decided to head out to the 20-acre timber lot that our neighbor gave us permission to hunt.

The best place to hunt was clear on the back side of the property close the railroad tracks and my older brother Josh and I decided we’d both hunt back there and cover the entire area in case any passing deer came through.

My younger bother, Justin, wasn’t old enough to hunt yet so he stood by me next to a tree.  Around 8 a.m. I heard some branches breaking in the direction we came in from. So I looked and saw this big bruiser for the first time.  I whispered to Justin not to move.

The deer walked within 20 yards and I pulled the trigger on my 12-gauge 870 Wingmaster that I had just purchased that same year.  I hit the deer right behind the front shoulders and he ran toward us.  I shot again when he was less then 10 yards from running me over and hit him in the chest.

He went down.  I yelled over to Josh and to my surprise the deer got up and ran back down the trail he came in on.  I shot again but missed.

The big buck only made it about 40yards however before he expired.

He field dressed at 210lbs, and had a gross score of 203 and net of 196 non-typical.  He has 18 points which includes a 5-inch drop-tine on his right side.
