Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 21

Kill Date: Nov. 23, 2008

County: Champaign

Season: Shotgun

The Eichelberger brothers will be talking about Nov. 23, 2008 for a long, long time.

Just hours after 12-year old Colton bagged a buck, older brother Jared took down the biggest prize of his 20-year old life - a 21-point deer with a rough score of 202.

Not bad for a hunter that was on the verge of putting away his muzzleloader for the season.

The big day began innocently enough.

The two brothers from Paxton nestled into their tree stand, on Champaign County land owned by a local farmer, around 2 p.m. For an hour, all the two saw was
a couple of does.

“Then all of the sudden we saw a vehicle put its reverse lights on and it backed up about 50 yards or so on the road,” Jared Eichelberger said. “We thought that was kinda odd, so we were just watching over there when we saw this huge buck chasing a doe in the opposite direction of us in the field across the road.”

The vehicle kept the buck from running across the road before the driver pulled away.

Fifteen minutes later, Colton Eichelberger nudged his older brother and yelled; “Deer! They’re coming back. They’re coming back. Get ready!”

The buck made a 45-degree turn and continued to chase the doe hard, about 80 yards from the Eichelberger stand.

“My heart started pounding and my hands were shaking as I was trying to find the buck in the scope on my muzzleloader,” the Paxton native said. “Finally I found him in my cross arrows and I yelled to get him to stop.”

The buck stopped.

“And I just fired and shot it,” said Eichelberger, a sophomore civil engineer major at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. “I smoked him in the front shoulder. That’s about it. I was about to give up, but finally got it.”

The two waited about two hours before tracking the deer down in a patch of trees in the middle of the field. The deer was the sixth, and by far the biggest, Jared Eichelberger has killed in five years of hunting.

“What a great hunt with my little brother,” Jared Eichelberger. “This was truly an experience of a lifetime.”
