Jamie Pittman’s 11-pointer

December 11, 2010

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 11

Kill Date: November 19, 2010

County: Morgan

Season: Shotgun

The day started off not so good. I found out that i wasn’t going to be able to hunt opening morning of first shotgun season, and on top of that, we wouldn’t get to the farm until around 4. My friend Ethan and I decided that since we would only have about an hour to hunt that we would just jump in a couple stands in the front of the property.

At first I thought I could maybe make it to the back of the farm where i had been hunting all season.  I had been watching plenty of great bucks back there all bow season so i was itching to get back there with my gun.  After walking only a couple hundred yards, I saw a bunch of deer out in the field between me and the stand I wanted to hunt.  I decided to turn around and meet Ethan back at the truck where he was still getting his camo on. I told him that there where deer out in the field so I was just gonna hunt the front with him.  We decided to hunt 2 lock-on stands that were probably about 400 yards apart.  Ethan was watching a large tilled up corn field and i was watching a small cove field that was in the back of that corn field.

After being in the stand only 5 minutes the does started to pile in my part of the field. There where 8 does in front of me by 4:30. Around 4:45 I heard a shot coming from Ethan’s direction and I could see him moving around.  My friend Ethan only shoots if its a big buck so I knew that he probably had a nice buck laying out in the field.

Much to my surprise the does didn’t care about his shot at all. They all just went right back to pawing up the corn. Just a few minutes after Ethan’s shot I saw a nice 3-year-old, 7-pointer cross the field about 100 yards in front of me. I decided to pass him knowing that there are plenty of bucks bigger then him out there. Right around 5:00, the majority of the does decided to leave the field, leaving only 2 young does out in front of me.

I knew shooting light was fading fast so I started to think about where I was going to hunt in the morning.  My train of thought changed directions suddenly when I saw a horns coming through some brush across the field before I saw the deer.  I knew right when I saw him that he was a shooter so I got ready.  He bumped the doe around a couple times and gave me a broadside shot at about 90 yards. He dropped right in his tracks. Instantly after I shot Ethan called me asking if it was me that shot and I told him yeah and he told me that he had shot one to.  We both had great bucks on the ground and only been hunting about an hour.

The deer will probably score around 150, and the deer Ethan killed was also around 150.
