Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 13

Kill Date: Dec. 5, 2009

County: Whiteside

Season: Shotgun

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of Erie hunter Jamie Melton is the story of his hunt for a 13-point Whiteside County buck.

I shot this deer while hunting with my hunting party. I had already filled my firearm tags during the first season. I shot a 135inch 9-pointer while doing a deer drive on the same piece of property that I shot this buck on. I also shot a doe.

We were short on guys with tags and all I had was my muzzleloader tags. I was posted on a fencerow along a timber edge. My dad and another hunter were going to walk through this small, overgrown pasture.

A small 8-pointer came out first. Then about a minute later this monster came out. I had no idea that he was this big until after I shot him. I just knew it was a shooter and pulled up and shot. I couldn’t believe that I had hit him. He was running, but was going to go by a guy without a buck tag! I figured “why not?”

I hit him in the shoulder and he went down. When I got over to him I couldn’t believe what I had. I actually felt sick to my stomach. I gross scored him at 198 inches. I am sure that I’m within two inches either way.

He has double split G2’s, his brow-tines are awesome at 9 1/2 and 11 5/8. He has a 6 1/2-inch drop tine. His main beams are 27 inches, he has around 42 inches of mass and is 21 1/8 inches wide.

I am a very fortunate hunter and consider myself lucky to have taken such an awesome deer! I devote a lot of time to hunting big bucks and it finally paid off!
