Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 13

Kill Date: Nov. 7, 2009

County: Shelby

Season: Bow

Eric Hull shot this buck on Nov. 7 in Shelby County.

Here is his description of the hunt.

“The trail cams were the first I had seen of this deer. I had been very careful when hunting this area after I found out he was around. It’s a creek bottom with thick nasty CRP trees. That was his core area. I hunted all around the trees trying to get a crack at him. On the night of Nov. 7 I grabbed my climber and went to a new area on the edge of this bedding area. I had seen 8 different bucks throughout the day and at 3:30 p.m. I finally got to see the buck I was after.

“Not only did I see him but he was with a 140-inch 10 point who I also have trail cameras of. I called him perfect 10. I saw the buck walking straight towards me he made a scrape and proceeded my way. I had an opening to my left and to my right but not directly in front. That is exactly where he stayed. The buck along with the other buck bedded down 20 yards from me and I couldn’t get a shot!

“An hour went by with me trembling watching this deer only 20 yards away. Finally by God’s grace a smaller buck walked behind me. Then I grunted and both big bucks stood up to investigate. I then had my shot at the old monarch. I shot the deer at 15 yards and he ran 75 before I watched him pile up.

“The amount of excitement I experienced that night I will remember for the rest of my life. He’s my third Pope and Young buck and largest to date in the five years I’ve been bowhunting. My only regret is that i did not weigh the buck because I have a feeling he would have tipped the 300-pound mark. Hands down the largest bodied deer myself or any of the five other lifetime deer hunters that saw him had ever seen.

“The drop tine is 9 inches long. The trail-cam makes this buck extra special.”
