Scorable Points: 15

Kill Date: Nov. 21, 2009

County: Knox

Season: Shotgun

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of firearm hunter Dominick Chellino of Elwood is the story of his hunt for a 15-point Knox County buck.

This deer season had been very slow, mainly because of weather and crops being in.

We hadn’t been seeing many large bucks, mostly spikes and does.

The first gun season rolled around and we still had our doubts but knew we couldn’t get the “big one” from the couch. The guys had a full day of gun hunting on me and I still had to beg to get out of working over the weekend.

When I got to camp everybody told me that they weren’t seeing any deer and that I should have just worked. The next morning, Saturday, I opted to hunt a stand that hadn’t seen a lot of pressure yet due to the fact it was surrounded by standing corn. After about 30 minutes of hunting I had two bucks come in to my Tinks 69 and park it right beneath me.

Up wind from me I heard some leaves crunching and I looked up to see my newest and greatest wall decoration on a head on course to what he thought was a territory fight. At 30 yards and closing I squeezed the trigger, hitting him in the right shoulder, quartering to. He took three rocky steps and dropped. The celebration had begun!

I am the youngest of six hunters on our property, at age 25, and even though it wasn’t with a bow, I am proud to have taken the largest buck ever off our ground.

The buck weighed over 300 pounds, had a 22.5-inch inside spread, 12-inch tines, and a 6-inch drop-tine.

I owe my success to my older hunting buddies, to thier knowledge and experience, that has been shared with me.  A special thanks to “The Boys From Illinois!”
