EDITOR’S NOTE: Here’s the story of Craig Sams’ 10-pointer in the hunter’s own words.

I was running a little late Sunday morning, Nov. 2, 2008. I had plans to hunt my lease 20 minutes away. With daylight just 10 minutes away, I made a decision to hunt a “suburban” stand I had put up just 200 yards from my drive just weeks before.

I had just pulled my bow up and nocked an arrow when I caught movement in the open field to my left. I had to rifle through my pack to find my “True Talker” grunt call and gave a couple of short grunts before he was out of sight.

The buck stopped and turned towards me and took a couple of steps in my direction.

I then gave a couple of bleats, which had him coming to me on a string.

He came to 20 yards and stopped behind a bush with no shot. I was at full draw for what seemed like a full minute, when finally the bruiser turned and quartered away, giving me a 14-yard shot.

I waited until 8 a.m. before I got out of the stand. I found the arrow covered in blood. But after only finding a few spots of blood, we decided to wait for another hour to track him.

We searched for more blood, with no luck. We decided to search in a grid pattern and found the buck in a deep ravine 150 yards from the tree stand. The buck field dressed at 207 pounds and Sams expects the rack to score about 150 inches.
