Chris Plue’s 8-pointer

October 07, 2006

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 8

Kill Date: Oct. 7, 2006

County: Knox

Season: Bow

At first Chris Plue feared the rattling he heard near his tree stand was another hunter.

But as daybreak approached last Saturday, Plue realized the antlers clicking together belonged to two bucks. Hoping at least one of the deer might come into range, the Knoxville bowhunter pointed his ever-present video camera in their direction. Then things changed in a hurry. A bigger buck emerged and chased off the two scuffling whitetails. As the big bruiser walked away, Plue clanked his rattling horns to turn the buck. One more rattle and a grunt lured the 8-pointer toward Plue through a dense thicket.

With little time to spare, Plue adjusted his camera and tried to guess where the deer might emerge. But he guessed wrong. And he had no time to adjust his camera before the deer got to within 10 yards. From there the 8-pointer was so close and Plue’s shot hit with such force that the buck staggered only a few feet before falling.

Sounds perfect, right? All but for one thing. The only footage Plue has is of the buck falling.

“I’d really have liked to get a shot of him walking in,” said Plue, who last year sold a video featuring 18 of his successful deer hunts including one massive 21-pointer and an impressive 12-pointer.

Plue’s Knox County 8-pointer has a 21 1/2-inch inside spread, thick beams and tall 9-inch brow tines. He figures the deer will score better than 160 inches.
