Scorable Points: 12

Kill Date: Nov. 10, 2008

County: Mason

Season: Bow

The opening of a new piece of public hunting ground in Mason County paid off nicely for Adam Downs of Tremont.

Hunting on the morning of Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, Downs and another friend saw three shooter bucks and 23 deer overall by 9:30 a.m.

The best buck he spotted was the one pictured above, a 12-pointer that was following four does who wanted nothing to do with the buck.

Downs said he shot the buck at 40-45 yards downhill through the timber. After it was shot, the buck ran 50 yards up the ravine and into the grass field where Downs’ hunting partner was stationed.

“He drew his bow to shoot the buck, only to watch it fall flat on its face 30 yards in front of him,” Downs said. “How’s that for peeing in his Cheerios? It’s my biggest buck and the fact it came on public ground makes it so much more special.”

At the time he saw his buck, Downs had mostly seen yearlings and 1 1/2-year-old bucks cruising prior to the big one arriving in range.

Bob Hammerich of Glasford is mounting the buck.
