Abby Jacobs’ first deer

December 03, 2010

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 3

Kill Date: Oct. 9, 2010

County: TBA

Season: Shotgun

Here is Abby’s story:

In 2006, she hunted the youth hunt and took her first deer with a Mossberg 20-gauge from 25 yards—a doe, since that was the rules then. She was unable to hunt in 2007 because of a dance recital. But when we went in 2008, the state had changed the rules to allow a doe or a buck. Abby was dead set on a Buck or nothing.

The buck I am with in the next picture came in on us Saturday morning, but Abby did not shoot.

As we talked, she told me the deer was at such an angle that a shot would have been to the stomach, and she knew that was not a ethical shoot. Opening morning of 2008 shotgun season, the same Buck entered the CRP field to my north and I was able to make a good shot on him. When we got home that weekend, Abby informed me I had shot her deer. We had the video of her hunt out and the deer I shot was the one she could not get a shot on.

2010 being her last time for the youth hunt, we got in the stand 6:20am. Oct 9th. We had been in the stand about 15 min. I picked up the gun to check to see if the Red Dot scope was turned on. Abby tapped on my arm asking for the gun back. A buck had come into the field out of my line of sight, but not hers. She laid the dot on him and dropped him at 60 yards. I was a very happy Father. We hugged and high-fived. What a wonderful feeling. Every Dad should get to take his kids Hunting and Fishing.
