Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 8

Kill Date: Oct. 25, 2009

County: McHenry

Season: Bow

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of Niles bowhunter Jimmy Doering is the story of his hunt for a McHenry County 8-point buck.

Bow season started slow for me this year, even though I was hunting hard. But that all changed the afternoon of Oct. 25 when I jumped in my stand at 3:45 p.m. and by 5:40 p.m. had shot a Pope and Young class 8-pointer.

The funniest/tragic part of my hunt that evening was that I brought my video camera for the first time this season. At 5 p.m. I zoomed in on a passing red fox. Just testing out the camera and I turned it off.

Then at 5:35 or so I heard something coming up the ridge I was sitting on and so I slowly looked over to see a big 8-pointer. He turned and stared walking towards me (on the same trail i walked in on) and I turned on the camera and hit record.

He cut down the other side of the ridge and gave me a 10-yard shot and I smoked him. After seeing him run 60 yards and hearing him crash I turned to the camera and realized it was zoomed in too much!

I walked out and went to my good friend Jim’s house and our other buddy Andy came over after telling them the story we went to track him.

This was very easy and quick as he went only 60 yards. I was so close to having this buck on video… Oh well, maybe next time. We got back to Jim’s house and gross greened him at 141 2/8 inches.

Thanks to the landowner, Jim, and Andy!
