Antlers in hidden places!

May 03, 2010 at 07:13 PM

While doing my early season scouting today, I came across this 70” typical shed. If the other side matches, this 160” class buck is alive and well! I found this shed in a tiny little sliver of timber that rides along a creek bed in the middle of nowhere. These are the types of places I love to hunt! Remember, big bucks = nervous and scared! These are perfect places for total seclusion from man and beast. I found all sorts of sign from last year, so this big boy must have been camping here for a while.

I’ll keep my eye on this place come Fall. I used that 200 yard rule to find this spot. This shed was not even 50 feet from his food source, which is common for this time of year. They don’t like to travel far in the cold months so they can preserve every ounce of energy they have. They need a ton of nutrients to grow their antlers back, so they lay back until the crops start growing again. From here, I would expect the bigger bucks to expand their range a bit. Nevertheless, this area will be his core area until late October.

Keep the light on Bucky, I’ll be back to visit in October!
