The art of the burn
A prescribed, or controlled, burn is an important land management tool.
But beyond its ability to help control invasive or woody plant species, it can be extremely beautiful.
This is a collection of photos taken over the past several days in central Illinois.
Locations include: Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary, Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, Centennial Park and Stuart Park in Springfield, Bunny Patch and Wolf Preserve.
Being part of the burn crew doesn’t leave much time for pictures, but I try to snap a few when circumstances allow.
Special thanks to everyone who burns with the Friends of the Sangamon Valley, a land trust and stewardship organization in central Illinois.
Check back this summer when the prairie wildflowers are blooming and I’ll post the results of our work.
