Nature photographers can play a role in conservation by helping to introduce the public to places, birds, animals, butterflies and other once-common creatures that have become rare due to habitat loss and environmental changes.

This photo shows a mated pair of Illinois state-threatened regal fritillaries at a state nature preserve near Havana. Regal fritillaries have very specific habitat requirements and are not the type of butterfly seen in backyard butterfly gardens. The selective focus caused by shooting close to the subject highlights the scalloped edges of the butterfly’s wings.
