Fall Migration
September 09, 2007 at 08:40 PM
With the onset of fall comes the southward migration of all types of birds. Hunters likely are fixated on waterfowl, but others are on the move as well. This northern harrier hawk flies low over a pasture looking for a meal. The harrier (which means hunter) is a grassland or marshland hawk that requires large blocks of habitat to raise a family. Northern harriers rarely nest in Illinois anymore. Look for the white rump patch, a sure identifier.
Photographing birds is a challenge at all times. Most are very small and fast-moving. Try to incorporate the bird into the scene rather than go for the close up field guide photo.
