Night Lights at Niagara Falls

It took two nights of trying to get a decent photo out of what seems like an easy photo opportunity at Niagara Falls, New York. Of course I ignored my own advice and failed to pack a tripod on my trip to attend an outdoor writers meeting, Sept. 16-20. Fortunately the railing at the edge of the observation area provided steady-enough support for the camera. The exposure was around 1/4 of a second at 400 ASA. While I found a photo I liked, I paid the price for not using a tripod. Several potentially nice photos were lost to camera movement.

I will admit, that as a bit of a purist, I expected to find the lighting of the falls to be tacky. Why tamper with one of nature’s most beautiful scenes, I thought? Well, I found that it didn’t bother me at all. In fact, i thought it was beautiful and very dramatic. The falls park is in town and as you can see, there are hotels and casinos across the river in Canada. Since the setting already is urban, the lights weren’t out of place at all.

A photographer could take a different picture each time, as the lights kept changing color. I liked this one because the spot light is visible and there are a variety of colored lights in use. And the falls make a great subject for photography at any time of day.
